Not much luck this season. After a tough spring chasing turkeys I finally bagged a jake with less than a week left. June 1st had me fishing with my friend Randy and catching quite a mess of fish (click fishing link below). No deer for us this year or Elk but I tagged a song dog on the Elk opener (scroll down). With a trip to Idaho next fall for any bull Elk my spirits are high and my outlook hopeful for next year!

I started the season trying to help my buddy Kevin Overbay get a turkey. For those who've not seen my other turkey pages, Kevin has been turkey hunting with me the last 4 years. Still, our luck together just hasn't quite clicked. We saw and heard lots of birds this spring and came really close many times. Like has happened in the past, the one day he wasn't able to go with me was the day I scored my Tom. There was less than a week left in the season and I really didn't expect to connect. Lady luck (or her little sister) was with me as it turns out and I dropped a nice Jake. I say her little sister though as my digital camera seemed to be taking pictures of my sucess but when I tried to download the images all of them were corrupt. Major bummer!

So, leason learned here today is to always have a backup camera for those really important occasions. I've been carrying a disposable for years "just in case" but never bothered since I had the digital. Now that little bugger will start earning it's keep! (For those who noticed, the turkey pictures are just pictures from my 2003 bird, flipped to look slightly different! Shhhhhh.....)

Well, the year is over now and not much luck for the Bowen hunters this year. A couple quail and this coyote I got on the opening day of Elk season.

I was walking up the Long Canyon to help Shane (my nephew) with his elk when I saw something running in the sage. He popped out about 80 yards away running and I shot and missed him. That sent him into warp speed as he flew down the hill toward the ravine at the bottom. Thinking I might have hit him I waited to see if he came out the other side, which he did at full steam. As he was running up the other side I lead him about 1/2 a coyote length and rolled him at 120 yards! Yehaw! Smoked him!

Here's a couple tired hunters posing with their success for the day. Not bad for a December quail hunt huh? My friend Steve Hemstrom and I went down to the river to chase quail in the foot-deep snow and we're having little luck. Steve had shot a nice double just before 11 am but other than that the day was slow. I went over to a spot I like and saw a rooster sitting on a branch only 10 feet away, refusing to flush. Managed to get him up and took a step around the brush and a second bird was hiding on a lower branch. Got both of them and the day turned better. We spotted a small flock of chuckers on the drive out and managed to knock one down. Good eats for dinner that night!
